# Does the Full Moon Affect Fishing? What Solunar Data Actually Says

"Fish the full moon" is repeated as confidently as any pressure-front folklore, but it's actually two different claims tangled together — moon PHASE and solunar PERIOD timing. We separated them, checked what Bitespan's own solunar math and bite-scoring model actually support, and were honest about where the evidence runs thin.

"Plan your trip around the full moon" shows up in nearly every solunar table and fishing almanac. Underneath that one piece of advice are actually two different claims: that the moon's PHASE (how full it looks) changes how much fish feed, and that the moon's daily TIMING (when it rises, sets, and passes overhead) creates predictable feeding windows. Bitespan computes both, in-house, from real astronomical calculations — so we can say plainly what the evidence does and does not back for each of them.

## What is solunar theory, exactly?

Solunar theory traces back to John Alden Knight, who published it in 1926 and built it around the moon's position, not its phase: a "major" feeding period centered on each lunar transit — when the moon is directly overhead or directly underfoot, roughly twice a day — spanning about an hour on either side, and a "minor" period centered on moonrise and moonset, spanning about 30 minutes on either side. Bitespan's [solunar module](/calendar) computes these directly from lunar-transit and rise/set calculations (verified against the U.S. Naval Observatory's published almanac to within a minute), the same underlying mechanics every printed solunar table is built on.

## Is that the same thing as "fishing the full moon"?

Not quite, and the mix-up is where most of the folklore goes sideways. Knight's actual theory is about the TIMING of transits and rise/set events, which shift about 50 minutes later each day regardless of phase — a new moon has major and minor periods on the same schedule a full moon does, just at different clock times each day of the month. "Full moon" specifically refers to illumination — the fraction of the moon's visible disc that's lit, which Bitespan also computes directly (0% at new moon, 100% at full). Solunar period timing and moon phase are two separate calculations that happen to share a data source, not the same claim.

## So does moon phase itself change how much fish feed?

This is the honest part, and it got sharper since this post first ran. The barometric-pressure claims covered in [our cold-front piece](/blog/cold-front-fishing) are backed by controlled feeding trials and a whole-lake angling experiment specific to the species this site models. No equivalent controlled, species-specific feeding study on moon PHASE has turned up. What has turned up since is a field study that went looking: peer-reviewed testing of North American freshwater fisheries found no significant relationship between lunar phase, lunar illumination or solunar values and catch rates. So the answer moved from "unverified here" to "tested, and nothing was found" — which is still not the same as "proven false", and we would rather draw that distinction than round it off in either direction.

## How much weight does Bitespan actually give solunar data?

Small, by design. The bite-scoring model weights water temperature at 0.40 of the score and light level (dawn/dusk vs. midday) at 0.25 — both the dominant drivers — with solunar period overlap at 0.15, barometric pressure at 0.10, and wind at 0.10. Within that 0.15, an hour inside a major period scores a full 1.0, a minor period scores 0.6, and an hour with no solunar overlap still gets a 0.3 floor rather than zero — because a day always has some baseline activity independent of the moon. That weight is not a vote of confidence, though. The model grades the solunar input "Not supported by testing" and prints that grade on the input's own line in every report, because peer-reviewed testing of North American freshwater fisheries found no significant relationship between solunar values, lunar phase or lunar illumination and catch rates — air temperature predicted catch better than any solunar table tested. We compute it because anglers expect it, and we show it separately so you can discount it.

## Should you actually plan a trip around the full moon?

Around the PERIODS, only as a last tiebreaker; around the PHASE specifically, no — not on the evidence available here. If two days look otherwise identical, there is no harm in taking the one whose dawn or evening window happens to overlap a major solunar period. But that is a coin-flip breaker, not a plan: the testing that went looking for the period effect did not find it. And illumination alone — "it's a full moon this week" — isn't something this site's evidence supports building a trip around either. For context on scale: walleye feed roughly 19% more actively at dawn and dusk than the daily average, a swing several times larger than the entire solunar term in the model, let alone the phase question inside it.

- Check whether your planned fishing window overlaps a major or minor period for that specific day — not just which phase the moon is in this month.
- Don't skip a dawn or dusk trip because the moon phase looks "wrong" — light level is the far larger, better-supported signal.
- Treat solunar overlap as a tiebreaker between two similar-looking days, not a go/no-go decision on its own.
- Be skeptical of any source that treats "full moon = better fishing" as settled fact — the species-specific literature to back that claim isn't in this site's data, and we haven't found it elsewhere either.

### Does a full moon make fish bite more?

No evidence this site has found says so. There's no controlled, species-specific feeding study behind the claim, unlike barometric pressure, which has several — and the peer-reviewed field testing that did look found no significant relationship between lunar phase or lunar illumination and catch rates. Bitespan computes moon phase directly but doesn't apply it as a feeding multiplier for that reason.
