Why we built Bitespan
“The reason we're building this: my cousin and I went fishing and wanted to build something that would make it easier to understand WHEN fish bite — easier to get the lure in front of the fish.”
That trip is the whole premise. Every angler knows the frustration: you show up, you fish for hours, and you never really know whether you missed the window or there just wasn't one. We wanted an answer to a simple question — when — instead of another app that just tells you the weather.
So Bitespan turns live National Weather Service data, solunar (moon) timing, and per-species behavior into an hour-by-hour bite forecast for your lake. It scores each hour Poor to Excellent and calls out the day's peak window, so you can plan around it instead of guessing.
Why you can trust the forecast
Every input behind a score is a named, checkable source: the National Weather Service's own hourly forecast for air temperature, wind, cloud cover, and pressure trend; real moon transit, rise, and set times for the solunar periods; and a behavior model built around each species' own optimal temperature range and response to light and pressure. Nothing is invented to fill a gap in the data.
That also means being honest about the data's limits. Bitespan shows real hourly scores inside the reliable forecast window, clearly-labeled day-level estimates beyond it, and nothing at all past the horizon where a forecast would just be a guess wearing a number.
How it works
From a cold start to a bite forecast in three steps

Pick a species and date
Choose walleye or bass and any day in the next week. Each species has its own behavior model — temperature, light, wind, and pressure.
Read the bite windows
Get an hour-by-hour forecast scored Poor to Excellent, with the day's peak window called out — so you know exactly when to be on the water.
