Understanding Solunar Feeding Periods
Solunar tables show up in almost every fishing almanac, but most anglers have never seen the actual definition behind "major" and "minor" periods — or read the peer-reviewed testing that went looking for the effect in catch data and did not find it. Here is the theory, the astronomy Bitespan runs on real moon-transit data, the grade our own bite score gives it, and how to use a solunar period without building a trip around one.
Almost every fishing almanac and tackle-shop wall calendar has a "solunar table" — a set of shaded time blocks that supposedly mark the best fishing windows of the day. Most anglers have used one without ever seeing the actual definitions behind it, or knowing where the theory came from. Bitespan computes these periods directly from real moon-transit astronomy rather than reading them off a printed table, so this guide covers three things: what a major or minor period actually is, what happened when researchers went looking for the effect in real catch data, and — because that answer is not flattering — why we still compute it anyway.
Where does solunar theory come from?
"Solunar theory" traces back to John Alden Knight, who published it in 1926 after observing that fish and game activity seemed to cluster around specific points in the moon's daily cycle. It's still the basis of the solunar tables printed in almanacs and fishing apps today. The theory defines two tiers of period, both keyed to where the moon is relative to your location, not to the sun or the clock:
- Major periods (the stronger of the two tiers as the theory ranks them): centered on lunar transit — the moment the moon crosses your local meridian, either overhead (upper culmination) or on the opposite side of the earth (lower culmination, sometimes called "moon underfoot"). Each major period spans the transit moment plus or minus one hour, so about two hours wide.
- Minor periods (the weaker tier as the theory ranks them): centered on moonrise and moonset. Each minor period spans the rise or set moment plus or minus thirty minutes, so about one hour wide.
- A calendar day always has exactly two major periods (transit happens roughly every 12 hours and 25 minutes), but can have zero, one, or two minor periods — some days the moon doesn't rise or doesn't set within the local calendar day at all.
What happened when solunar theory was tested?
This is the part the almanacs leave out, and it is the reason this guide is worth reading. Bitespan grades each of the five inputs to its bite score for how well the underlying claim actually holds up in the literature, and shows that grade inside every report. Solunar timing carries the lowest grade in the set: "Not supported by testing". The note the score itself prints under it, word for word:
Peer-reviewed testing of North American freshwater fisheries found no significant relationship between solunar values, lunar phase or lunar illumination and catch rates (SN Applied Sciences, 2023) — air temperature predicted catch better than any solunar table tested. It is shown because anglers expect it, and it is shown separately so you can discount it. Its weight is under owner review.
Two things that grade does not say. It does not say the moon is irrelevant to fish: lunar illumination is a real light source at night, and light level is the strongest single timing signal this model has. And it does not say solunar theory has been disproven — it says that when researchers looked for the effect in catch data, they did not find it, and that a plainer input predicted catch better. "Not supported by testing" and "false" are different claims, and only the first one is ours to make.
How does Bitespan actually compute solunar periods?
Rather than reading a pre-printed table (which is usually computed for one reference location and reused everywhere), Bitespan computes moonrise, moonset, and lunar transit directly from your lake's own latitude and longitude for the requested date, using the same higher-precision astronomy library used for the rest of the site's timing data. See the day's conditions for the actual computed periods on a given day — they shift with location and date the same way sunrise and sunset do, so a table built for one spot several hundred miles away won't line up with your water. The astronomy is sound whatever you make of the theory built on top of it; those are separate questions, and we only claim the first.
How much does the bite score actually trust solunar timing?
Bitespan's bite-scoring model is a weighted sum of five factors, and solunar timing carries a 15% weight — behind water temperature (40%, since a cold-blooded fish's metabolism is governed by it) and light level (25%, the strongest single timing signal within a day). Pressure and wind each carry 10%. Weight and evidence are separate axes, and worth reading together: at 15% solunar is not even the smallest term in the model, which is precisely why its grade is printed beside it on its own line instead of being buried inside one number. Its weight is under owner review.
- A major period (moon overhead or underfoot) scores 1.0 on the solunar sub-score — the top of the three tiers.
- A minor period (moonrise or moonset) scores 0.6.
- No overlap with any period at all still scores a 0.3 floor, not zero — there is always some baseline feeding activity across a day, and the model doesn't treat 'outside a solunar window' as 'no chance.'

Why does light level matter more than solunar timing?
For context on scale: walleye feed roughly 19% more actively at dawn and dusk than the daily average — a swing larger than the entire solunar sub-score's range from floor to ceiling, and one that comes from the better-graded of the two inputs. That's why the planning order in the how-to above puts light level first: a major period that happens to land at dawn is a good window because of the dawn, and a major period at 2pm on a bright, still day is competing against a much bigger factor working against it.
So how should you actually use a solunar period? As the last tiebreaker, not the first filter. If two days look otherwise identical — same water temperature, same wind, both trips at first light — there is no harm in taking the one whose window overlaps a major period. What the evidence will not support is skipping a good dawn because the table looks wrong for that day, or planning a trip around the table in the first place. Pick your hours off the light window first, not the solunar table
Start from dawn and dusk. Light level carries a heavier weight in the bite score than solunar timing does and is far better supported by testing — the solunar input is graded "Not supported by testing" in every report we produce. Use light level to choose your hours, and treat a solunar overlap as a bonus rather than the reason you went.

Treat pressure and wind as tie-breakers, not vetoes
Solunar timing is one of five inputs to Bitespan's bite score, not a switch. Don't skip a promising hour just because the pressure trend looks 'wrong' — check the day's full hour-by-hour rating on /conditions instead of reasoning about any one factor alone.
Log what actually happened against the window
Note whether the bite matched the period, and by how much. Peer-reviewed testing has not found a relationship between solunar values and catch rates, so a season of your own results on your own water is better evidence than any published table — and it is the only way to find out whether the input deserves any of your attention.
